CARMEL MOUNTAIN RANCH LIBRARY

WHAT

Library

WHERE

San Diego, CA

WHEN

1997

The concept for this library is that of a “pavilion in a garden.” All public spaces within the library open onto a passive enclosed courtyard, which encourages patrons to utilize protected outdoor reading areas. Over 50% of the building’s windows are operable and doors to the garden are abundant. The connection with the natural environment is intentional and real. A thoughtful landscape plan places numerous trees throughout the site, with the intention of softening the harsh summer sun and enhancing the psychological effect of natural ventilation.
