In conjunction with the development spurred on by the new Petco Park, an urban design plan for three blocks between Market and Island, from 9th to 12th Streets was developed. Recognizing the distinctly different character and dynamic of each street led to a plan that focuses on the streets, rather than buildings. Island Avenue will become a residential street and thus, broad sidewalks dominated by trees were proposed. Market Street is quickly forming as a street of high energy defined by massive buildings and it was designed to accommodate that activity. The north-south streets of 9th through 12th are the gateway in and out of the Ballpark District and are designed to support high movement.
