M.W. Steele Group was commissioned by the City of Fresno and Tower District Community to develop a streetscape plan for the Tower District in Fresno, California.
The project involved three community workshops with area residents, business owners and community leaders. Working with the community, M.W. Steele Group was asked to identify and design streetscape furniture, gateways, key intersections, sidewalks and even small plazas. These were incorporated in a final report and street improvement program for a historic, “mom and pop” commercial area that is home to landmark buildings, such as the Tower Theater (built in the 1939). One of the biggest challenges was to find ways to preserve the existing eclectic and artistic character of the neighborhood, while providing a consistent and unifying set of improvements. Active participation and leadership of locals in the area helped take the Tower District to greater heights.
