Steele Residence
Winner of an AIA Merit Award in 1991 and San Diego Home and Garden Magazine Home of the Year in 1989, the Steele residence illustrates the interest of MW Steele Group in exploring ways to integrate the San Diego climate in our buildings. The original house was a simple traditional cottage near the beach in La Jolla that evolved in to a courtyard house through careful design.
Each room opens on to the courtyard, creating a seamless integration of all the rooms of the house through this private outdoor space. Preserving the integrity of the original 1938 design was important to maintaining a good “fit” with the neighborhood. The exterior remains as it was originally, with the secret of the courtyard contained within.
After almost 20 years, this house continues to be a source of enjoyment and comfort.
