The White Sands of La Jolla
The White Sands of La Jolla is a continuing care retirement community situated on approximately 7.1 acres of beach front property. This facility provides its 250 active senior citizens with extensive commons areas in addition to three types of living units: independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing.
MW Steele Group was charged with the expansion and renovation of an existing 1950’s facility to include 45 new independent living villas and a new 35-unit freestanding assisted living building. A total of 8 structures are constructed over two levels of subterranean parking with 220 parking spaces.
The primary challenges confronting MW Steele Group’s design team included dealing with an environmentally sensitive site that is situated directly on the ocean, expanding the complex in a way which would not negatively impact the adjacent single-family residential neighborhood, integrating underground parking and service tunnels to the existing facility with minimal impact to the site, and yielding an overall master plan for the expansion that unifies both the old and new portions of the project.
