Pulmonary Medicine Support Facility

Pulmonary Medicine Support Facility

Part of the UCSD Hillcrest medical campus, the Pulmonary Medicine Support Facility provides 40,000 SF of research, administration and clinical facilities. Located at the edge of a beautiful canyon, the design concept incorporates many opportunities for the building’s occupants to enjoy the views and natural attributes of the cascading site.

The site for the Pulmonary Center is one that creates an interface between the medical campus and the surrounding community. It is also the edge between the urban street grid and a canyon that extends from Hillcrest to Mission Valley. This complex site demanded a complex solution.

The building has two faces: one that greets the urban grid of the street and campus, and the other that faces the grove of trees that spills down the hill into the canyon. The building's north side, a rectangular form, welcomes both automobiles and pedestrians. Facing south to the canyon, the building form becomes organized by wooden trellises (shading the strong sun) supported by concrete columns forming the primary structure of the building.

The scale, form, materials, and texture of the building have all been used to provide a successful transition between this new building and the existing campus and hillside.
