Hillel Student Center
The Hillel Student Center at the University of California San Diego is situated on a very sensitive site which literally forms a transition zone between the UCSD campus and an adjacent residential community.
Despite facing considerable opposition from the community at the outset, MW Steele Group achieved consensus on the siting, accessibility, and architectural design of this project by working closely with Hillel administrators, the student users, the local community planning group, and the city of San Diego.
Primary components of the Center include a large multipurpose room for dining, social events, and performances, as well as study rooms, a library, a kosher kitchen, a TV lounge, and outdoor activity terraces. The scale and character of the project were intentionally designed to blend with and complement the adjacent residential community.
