This 38,000 s f community and recreation facility for the City of Encinitas includes a senior center, community hall, meeting rooms and a multi-purpose gymnasium/ auditorium. Designed in response to both community input and unique site requirements (ocean and mountain views, natural site topography and biological and environmental constraints), this project develops the remaining 10 acres of its 23 acre site providing outdoor tennis and basketball courts, nature trails, group and family picnic areas and pastoral landscaping with hilltop meadow.
Oakcrest Park is an outstanding example of private/ public cooperation and partnership. Given the task of programming and design for this community center, M.W. Steele Group approached the project through a series of interviews with staff and users to develop a program for the site that would comply with the goals for the project. A Citizen’s Advisory Committee
was formed with bi-weekly open meetings that were held over a several month period. During this time, the masterplan and building concepts evolved.
